Pull up a crate, angler. Fishing turns a quiet stretch of water into supper, cooking ingredients, and the occasional aquatic curiosity. Most catches feed naturally into Cooking, where a humble fish can become a meal that lasts far longer than ordinary trail rations.
Getting started
Before you wet a line
- Buy a Fishing Pole from a fishing-supplies vendor.
- Train the Fishing skill. Once learned, it appears in your Ability Book.
- Bait is optional. Vendors sell grubs, and foragers can sometimes find their own. You may cast without bait, though the game will warn you.
Where to find the fishing folk
- Night Harbor: Fisherman Abduh is found at the end of the dock, across from the fishmonger. Fishing supplies and an Expert Fisherman are also documented on the docks.
- Evershade Weald: The fisherman beside the Traveler's Lift—the newbie lift—sells poles and bait. The Fishing trainer waits down by the pond behind him.
Casting without hooking your own boots
- Equip the Fishing Pole in your primary weapon slot. It is two-handed, so put the shield away first.
- Drag Fishing from your Ability Book to an open hotbar slot.
- Stand close to a suitable shore, dock, or riverbank.
- Activate Fishing and let the line do its work.
What the old hands have observed
- Baitless fishing has produced Whitefish commonly and Basa less often from skill 50 onward.
- Skill gains may occur as soon as the line is cast, and as many as three gains have been observed from one cast.
- Fishing gains have been observed above skill 91 in ordinary waters, although progress becomes much slower at higher skill.
- Not every promising puddle holds fish. The river in Evershade Weald has been observed returning “You cannot fish here.”
