The whispers of your arrival have reached my ears well before this scroll ever did, young shaman.
I have been preparing for you. Here, please accept this mortar and pestle. You will need it for your first task.
You say
You enter/say What task?
Old forces threaten the balance of the Weald and beyond. The fae grow restless and resentful. The spirits of the dead find no rest.
We must do what needs be done to preserve the balance, young one. My old bones are not up to this task, but perhaps a young listener such as yourself could quell some of these... disturbances.
You say

You should start with the undead that have begun to crawl out from long forgotten places.

The mournful howls of the Weald's wolves haunt my dreams of late. More of their number fall to savagery and madness by the day.
I have altered the bone dust that you collected, so that it may cling to the dismal agonies of woeful spirits.
There is a wolf pack amongst the western cliffs whose cries concern me most. Locate and scatter the dust at the entrance of their den to reveal the source of this dismay.

You were not wrong to mete out punishment for the imbalance they caused. I would say you deserve this.
Varilis Thornvine proceeds to whisper something into the small hoop, as though it were an ear yearning to hear one of his tales. He smiles softly and offers the hoop back to you, now empowered further by the spirits.
Well done Listener. Though now we must see about this strange toadstool. Perhaps it can tell us a clue.

Varilis Thornvine slowly brings the toadstool up toward his elongated ear, as though listening to murmurs that only he could hear.

You say

I believe you will be capable of hearing a great many things before long, young one. Not just from toadstools, but from all manner of objects in which the spirits reside.
Even from objects that have been with you from the near beginning. Please, allow me to see your apprentice hoop so that I may listen to all it has experienced in your journey thus far.

An interesting journey you have taken to get here. Your hoop is excited to experience more, so I shall return it to you. Be sure to hold onto it so it can take in more of your continued story.
You will also need to bring this toadstool with you for your next task. We are now being whispered toward a group who lives reclusively among the roots of Faelindral.
Tell me, young Listener, do you know of the Circle of Spores?
You say
You enter/say What circle of spores?
They are a cloistered cult of druids who have a strong connection to fungus and mushrooms. If there are any within the Weal who would be able to tell us the source of this strange toadstool, it would be them.
I have safely packed the toadstool within the box I provided you. Deliver it to a member of the Circle of Spores, who seclude themselves beneath Faelindral in Sporehave Karts.
I know not the name of the particular druid who may be able to help us, but the Circle are not unwelcoming of guests. Their experiments on the other hand...
You should be strong enough to call upon the spirits to conceal yourself. If the Circle's experiments have gone awry, as they are known to, it may be prudent to learn such a spell before departing.
Spirits watch over you, young Listener.

I am looking to produce a new strain of fungus that is far more robust than previous generations.

Sporeweaver Underveil bows his head politely, a faint glimmer reflecting from his shaven scalp.
Then we have an agreement. You can use the empty box that you brought the toadstool in as a container. It seems sturdy enough.
All I require are the scales of green drakelings, along with some wax from wasp workers. Five of each should suffice for my needs.

You return at a most fortuitous moment, young shaman. I have just finished my examination of the toadstool and I must say, the results are quite intriguing.
You also have my gratitude for your efforts in procuring these components. Drake scales and wax are notoriously resistant to fungus, which shall aid my endeavors to strengthen our strains.
Though I imagine you must be curious to hear the results?
You say
You enter/say What results?
The toadstool by itself is not so significant; rather, it is the odd hex that seems to be afflicting all of its contained moisture.
This hexed moisture makes its way into the numerous spores released by the toadstool, and once a great number of these spores are taken into the lungs... well...
The victim is afflicted with a terrible malady that assaults the mind directly, causing hallucinations, emotional strain, and potentially even madness.
I daresay that whoever conjured such a hex has a sinister imagination. Though, it would appear the moisture is the key to all this, as it is what drips with malice. A malice that feels all too familiar to me...
I hope this was as much help to you as your efforts were to the Circle of Spores. Thank you once more, friend.

Your return was whispered to me, young Listener. As was the conversation you had with the Sporeweaver.
It seems that moisture is the key to what has been ailing the great bears, yes? If our clues are to be the fae and moisture, then there is only one possible direction to look toward next.
Though that direction must wait for now. I must confer with the spirits on this matter, but you have the thanks of the forest, along with my own, for all that you have uncovered.
Take this headdress so that you might be protected from any intrusions into your own mind. It may prove useful, should this path lead us toward those capable of causing madness and grief.

It appears the spirits vouch for your capabilities, young Listener. As such, I am confident I can entrust you with the next task.".
You say
You enter/say What next task?
As you already know, spirits of the Weald are succumbing to a terrible malady of the mind.
From the myconid creatures of the Circle of Spores to the bestial spirits of the great wolf packs, it seems any who settle themselves close to the banks of the river are prone to bouts of inexplicable madness.
This, I believe, is being perpetrated by the naiads of the Whispering Pools.
You say
You enter/say What Whispering Pools?
The naiads have long since been bound to the Whispering Pools. They are forbidden from leaving, due to a pact with the Queen of the Winter Court herself.
Though being bound does not mean the naiads are without their own ambitions.
Many of them yearn to be free of the Whispering Pools, and this latest act of whimsy is likely an attempt to expand their means without breaking the terms of their pact.
If we are to do something to counteract the ploys of the naiads, we must first understand what sort of enchantments they are dispersing into the Weald's waters.
I advise you to seek out Laenyth Windharp of the Lambent Wanderers. She is their tale keeper, and the bards are known to study and even conduct performances that mimic the alluring call of a siren.
If any in Faelindral would know of water nymph enchantments, it would be them. Show her your hoop to present yourself as a Preserver, then glean what you can about the magics of the naiads. Return to me with anything you manage to uncover.

You will find our gal on the first floor in the bard side of the lantern. Hand your hoop to Laenyth Windharp.
Laenyth Windharp regards the hoop with a smile before offering it back to you.
Ah, to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit, apprentice? I'm fond of Listeners joining me for a tale. You lot are remarkably attentive to our stories.
Is there anything in particular that you wish to hear about?
You say
You enter/say Naiads.
Laenyth Windharps
The naiads? I'm quite familiar with their tale, as young bards are often stricken by their songs... competitively or otherwise.
Laenyth Windharps
They're a beautiful people, if not prone to wickedness and uncaring whimsy. Their songs can flow as gently as a stream or crash with the cacophonous roar of a waterfall, as befits their mood.
Do you wish to hear what's known of their Mistress Naelira, or are you more interested in their siren's song?
You say
You enter/say What siren's song?
The siren's call... it's a popular and powerful technique capable of fully capturing a person's attention. They're also prone to suggestion while captivated, turning a once alluring song into a dangerous one if used with ill intent.
Many of the faerie courts are impressive singers in their own right, though the naiads' sirens occupy a league of their own. Did you know a voice can carry over great distances when delivered across a span of calm water?
The sirens utilize their affinity with water to naturally enhance their own voices, so a mere conversation can cause one to become enraptured if they're not careful.
Some also believe the naiad sirens are capable of singing into the currents of flowing water, so their voices can reach those downstream. I personally don't believe such a thing is possible... unless you believe the old rumors.
You say
You enter/say What old rumors?
The naiads have remarkable voices, though even with their affinity for water, they cannot sing with their full cadence while submerged in the very pools they call home.
A voice, no matter how strong, would be drowned out by the flow of a river as it crashes against the banks and weaves its way through rock and reed.
However, there were rumors of a technique one could use to protect a song on its journey through a perilous river. Something to enshroud it is a pocket of air, such as... a bubble or river foam.
I've made notes on such a theory before. Now where did I...
Laenyth Windharp searches through her belongings before a moment of recognition strikes her. She then withdraws a section of leafscroll.
Ah, here they are! These notes cover the methods one might use to enhance a siren's call. You're more than welcome to them, should the Perservers have use of my old theories.

I see that you do not return empty-handed, young Listener. Let us see what knowledge Laenyth has documented regarding the magic of naiads...
Varilis Thornvine carefully and slowly peruses Laenyth's notes. His elderly lips purse in interest at some points while frowning at others, accentuating his already weathered features.
Voices carried through bubbles or foam... quite curious, indeed. Could the naiads be sending their very voices through the currents of the river using this method?
You must investigate this for us, <name>. Your talents should allow you the means to sense magical influences upon the world, if you have studied your scrolls.
I bid you venture out to the very end of the river, furthest from the Whispering Pools, to the crest of the mighty waterfall that spills out into the Twilight Sea.
Use your spell to sense magical flows and determine whether the naiads' enchantments have extended so far out from their domain. Should you discover enchanments at the falls, take a sample of the water using this flask and return it to me.

A curious thing, this sample you have brought me. Even while contained, I can hear the intrusive melodies that are bound within.
This is a disturbing revelation. If the naiads have somehow found a way to carry their voices down the span of the entire river, it threatens the very balance of the Weald.
We must take action to purge this enchantment before more minds are drawn into madness.
Take this sigil. young Listener. You will need it to fashion a totem that can be used to cleanse the waters of the naiad's influence. It is but one component of this specific recipe.
You say
You enter/say What recipe?
To fashion the totem, you will need to acquire some fine wood for the base. Four timber should be enough. If you have a talent for logging, you may find some in Keeper's Blight.
While in the Blight, you will also need the skins of four serpents that roam the fields. The serpent's flesh is well suited for warding away moisture.
Lastly, you will need something from the river water that is both born from it, but also immune to a siren's song. I believe Selstie Kelp will serve the purpose well.
Scour the river's floor here in Evershade for at least two strands of kelp, then fashion everything together along with the sigil of purging at one of the carpentry tables on Traders Terrace.
Worry not if you are unskilled with such labors, the totem need not be a masterpiece. Return to me with your crafted totem, and I shall guide you further.

It did not matter which minds she was forced to break, so long as her voice could reach out to someone capable of freeing them from their bond. A tragic tale, if also misguided and malevolent.
