There was a time when Hult and I used to make a few armor pieces from whatever was on hand, back when the iron supply was low. Cinder beetle armor was one of those.

If my memory serves me right, I'll need two cinder beetle carapaces, two cinder beetle legs, and a cinder beetle mandible.
Be careful handling the mandibles. The serrated sort are especially nasty... I prefer not to use those.
On top of the beetle parts, I'll need two extra pieces of charcoal for the helm. Cinder shells are fire-resistant and hard to work with, so my forge will need to be blazing hot for this to work.
Those are just the materials for construction... now, let's talk payment.

Despite looking like metal, I've always found that cinder shells mold better if they're treated like hardened leather.
Dilshad Abolfazl at the tannery could mix up a tanning agent for you if you bring him a cinder beetle gland and some cinder blood.
Visit Dilshad Abolfazl, who is located at the Tannery in Night Harbor near the West Gate Bank. Hand him 1x Cinder Beetle Gland and 1x Cinder Beetle Blood.

Shipwright Benlink heats the resistant carapaces and forms them into plates, stretching the mandible to create a waistline of sorts. He weaves the legs between each plate to hold them together, then coats them in a tanning agent, which draws out their color and gives them a fine sheen.
There you are, one pair of cinder beetle greaves! I always enjoy working with this stuff, though, not as much as Huda. They say he could make an entire ship out of beetle shells!

Cinder beetles? Why, yes, of course! Ever since I was a young boy, I'd use beetle carapaces as makeshift toy boats and float them out on the harbor.
I always dreamed of making a full-sized craft out of their shells... but I could never find one large enough. I did manage to make an impressive breastplate, at least.

For the breastplate, I'd need four cinder beetle carapaces, two of their serrated mandibles, a giant cinder beetle eye, as well as a special varnish.

Master Shipwright Huda leans in close and whispers.
Most people try to work the shells like steel, when really they're more like the wood of a ship!
For that reason, I use a varnish that's made up of two parts resin, two parts cinder blood, one part fish oil, and some Twilight Bay rum!
Old Hult at the Sojourner camp knows how to make the varnish. Just bring him the proper ingredients.

It's been an age since I made any o' this for Huda! He's the reason I made my first bowl, he is. Gonna make his own ship one day, and ol' Hult is gonna cross the sea on a beetle's back!
Hult Beetlewrangler proceeds to mix the resin, oil, and cinder blood together to form a rich and dark varnish. He guzzles down the rum and lets out a loud belch.
